Cabinet Painting vs Replacing: How to Decide
By the Luxe Painting & Remodeling team, 17+ years painting Southwest Florida homes and businesses.
Paint your cabinets when the boxes are solid and you only dislike the color or finish. Replace them when the boxes are warped, water damaged or falling apart, or when you want a new layout. Refinishing keeps your kitchen out of a tear-out and usually costs far less than new cabinets of the same quality.
That is the short answer. The rest of this guide shows you how to check your own cabinets, what professional cabinet refinishing involves, and where painting is the wrong call.
When does painting cabinets make sense?
Painting makes sense when the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and the problem is cosmetic. Dated color, a worn or yellowed finish, scratches and scuffs are all finish problems, and a finish problem has a finish solution.
Painting is the right call when:
- The boxes are solid wood or plywood in good shape
- Doors and drawers close square and sit flat
- You like your current kitchen layout
- The style is dated but the construction is not
- You want the update done in days, not weeks
Many older kitchens were built with better boxes than the budget cabinets sold today. Replacing solid boxes with thin new ones to fix a color problem is paying more for less.
When is replacing cabinets the better choice?
Replacement is the better choice when the boxes themselves have failed. No paint fixes a structural problem, and an honest contractor says so before quoting you a refinish.
Replace instead of paint when:
- Boxes are swollen, delaminating or soft from water damage
- Shelves sag or mounting points have pulled loose
- You want a different layout, more storage or new appliances that need new openings
- Doors are warped so badly they no longer sit flush
If only one or two components have failed, there is a middle path. One Luxe customer had a worn stairway refinished with a two-part commercial coating instead of paying for a replacement. The same thinking applies to cabinets: repair the failed part, refinish the rest.
Can laminate or thermofoil cabinets be painted?
Laminate can usually be painted. The surface is slick, so it needs a thorough cleaning, scuff sanding and a bonding primer before any color goes on. Skip the bonding primer and the paint peels in sheets.
Thermofoil is different. Thermofoil is a thin vinyl layer heat-sealed over an MDF core, and once it starts peeling or bubbling, paint cannot reliably hold it down. Intact thermofoil can sometimes be refinished, so the honest answer comes from inspecting the doors, not from a rule. We check the material at the Free Consultation and tell you which doors can be refinished and which cannot.
What does professional cabinet refinishing involve?
Professional refinishing is mostly preparation, the same as every painting job done right. Here is the sequence Luxe follows:
- Free Consultation. We inspect the boxes, doors and material and confirm refinishing will hold.
- Project Planning. Colors, sheen and schedule are set in writing.
- Preparation. Hardware comes off, surfaces are cleaned, deglossed and sanded, and everything around the work is masked.
- Application. Primer first, then the finish coats. Doors, drawers and cabinets are often sprayed for a smooth, even finish.
- Final Review. We walk the kitchen with you and correct anything before the job closes.
One customer described the result on her refinished built-in this way: “Everything came out so clean, and the attention to detail was perfect!”
Cabinet painting vs replacing, side by side
| Painting / Refinishing | Replacing | |
|---|---|---|
| Fixes | Color, finish, wear | Structure, layout, storage |
| Kitchen downtime | Days | Weeks |
| Demolition | None | Full tear-out |
| Keeps existing layout | Yes | Optional |
| Wrong choice when | Boxes are damaged | Boxes are solid and only the finish is dated |
Is DIY cabinet painting worth it?
DIY can work on a small vanity if you are patient with prep. A full kitchen is a different job. Cabinets take more abuse than any painted surface in a house: steam, grease, cleaning sprays and a thousand touches a week. A brush-and-roll DIY finish over poorly deglossed doors usually shows brush marks within weeks and chips within months.
If you try it yourself, do not skip the deglosser or the bonding primer. If you want a sprayed, durable finish and a 2-year warranty on materials and workmanship behind it, that is what we do.
FAQ
Do you paint bathroom vanities too?
Yes. Vanities are cabinets and get the same prep and finish as kitchen cabinets. They are also a smaller first project if you want to see the quality before committing a kitchen.
What paint goes on cabinets?
Luxe uses Sherwin-Williams products matched to the surface. Cabinet finishes need harder, more washable coatings than wall paint, which is one reason wall paint on cabinets fails early.
How do I know if my cabinet boxes are solid?
Open a lower door near the sink and press the floor and side panels. Solid panels feel rigid. Swelling, soft spots or flaking along the bottom edges mean water has gotten in.
Can you paint the kitchen walls at the same time?
Yes, and it is the efficient way to do it. Cabinets, walls, trim and ceilings can be planned as one project through our interior painting service, so the kitchen is finished once, not twice.
